Black History Month is happening in October and it's when people celebrate the contribution that black people have made to the UK.

It started 30 years ago because, throughout history, black people have been discriminated against and treated badly because of the colour of their skin.

What are some key events in Black British history?

• AD43 - With the beginning of the Norman conquest, Roman soldiers from North Africa arrive in Britain.
• 1241 - The earliest known drawing of a Black Briton was made in the Domesday Book.
• 1760's - The population of Black people living in Britain is 20,000.
• 1785 - The campaign for the freedom of enslaved people begins in Britain.
• 1774 - Ignatius Sancho is recorded as the first Black British voter.
• 1833 - The Slavery Abolition Act becomes law in Britain.
• 1913 - John Arches becomes the first Black mayor in London.
• 1965 - The Race Relation Acts banned discrimination on the ‘grounds of colour, race, or ethnic or national origins’ in public places in Britain.
• 1966 - The Notting Hill Carnival is created.
• 1987 - The first Black Members of Parliament are elected.
• 2001 - The Race Relations Amendment Act states that all public services must actively promote racial equality.
• 2006 - The Racial and Religious Hatred Act makes it illegal to stir up hatred against someone
• June 2020 - People in Britain join worldwide protests demanding justice following the death of the American George Floyd.
