Earth Day 22nd April 2022

Earth Day 22nd April 2022

Earth day helps raise awareness of environmental issues such as global warming and plastic pollution. It's really important to get kids involved at a young age, so they learn about the challenges facing our environment, and the ways they can help.

In this special guide to Earth Day for kids, we explain what Earth Day is and why it's so important in ways kids can easily understand.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is celebrated every year on the 22nd of April.

It is a special day to celebrate our planet and all of the amazing things we have on it.

The first Earth Day was held in April 1970 and people celebrated by planting trees, cleaning up beaches and parks, and holding rallies.

It inspired many other initiatives, including the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

We continue to celebrate Earth Day every year around the world.

Earth Day Facts

Here are some fun facts about Earth Day you can learn, save or share with your friends.

  • Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd.
  • The first Earth Day was held in 1970. The idea originally came from US Senator Gaylord Nelson.
  • Each year there is a special Earth Day theme.
  • More than 1 Billion people celebrate Earth Day every year.
  • People celebrate Earth Day by planting new trees, cleaning up beaches and parks, and holding rallies.
  • There is an official Earth Day song, called Earth Anthem. You can listen to it in the video below.

Why do we celebrate Earth Day?

Earth Day is a day to show how we care for our planet and all the animals and plants on it.

It is important to take good care of the earth so that we can keep living here and so future generations will be able to enjoy animals, nature, and everything that's amazing about our Earth.

Having a special day helps raise awareness so we can educate other people about what it means to be eco-friendly, and how important it is to look after our environment.

Why do we wear green on Earth Day?

On this day children and students all over the world go to school dressed in green, or they wear a green ribbon.

Green is the colour of life and nature. We wear green to show our love for Earth's plant life.

What do we do on Earth Day

We try to make the world look beautiful by cleaning up things that have been thrown away or left in parks, planting new trees, and being nice to animals and to each other.

Or we can think of other ways we can help the environment by using less, or caring for the trees, plants, and animals near us.

How can I help the environment?

There are plenty of simple and small ways that you can help the environment. Here's just a few:

  • Save energy - turn off your lights when you aren't using them.
  • Pick up litter that is on the ground or in a park.
  • Use less water by taking shorter showers, turning off the water while brushing your teeth, and not leaving the water running when you wash dishes.
  • Plant more trees (Yes, you can plant more than one! Just make sure to plant them in holes that are big enough for their roots.)
  • Walk or ride your bike instead of getting your parents to drive you places. Encourage your family to do the same! Every time you leave the car at home, you burn fewer fossil fuels, produce less carbon dioxide, and get fitter and healthier too!
  • Turn off your electronics when they aren't being used.

When we all work together, we can make a big difference in how Earth looks and keep it safe for our future.

Activities for Kids on Earth Day

There are many ways in which you can celebrate our beautiful planet this Earth Day. Here are some simple, fun activities that anyone can try.

Litter Pick

Help to keep the earth clean by picking up trash near where you live. Get other kids, parents, or maybe even your teacher to come along too! At the end of Earth Day, see how much you picked up and compare this to what other families collected.

You could even design a points system to make it more interesting. Assign each trash item a points value. Give bonus points for plastic bottles or bags - each one you pick up means one less that will end up in our rivers and oceans!

Plant a Tree

Plant a seed or small tree on Earth Day. Keep track of its growth throughout the year and notice how much it has grown from when you first planted it.

Trees breathe in carbon dioxide. So they're very important to help us fight climate change, reduce global warming and make the world a healthier place.

Educate Your Parents

Give your parents a list of all the ways that you can think of to help the environment as a family.

Draw up a chart of what they need to do each week, and make sure they stick to it!

Make a Poster or Mural

For a fun activity for the whole family try creating a mural using leaves as your paintbrush!

Or how about making a poster advertising recycling at your school. Get your family involved too, then ask your teacher if you can display it in the hall or classroom.

Make Some Recycled Arts & Crafts

Make recycled art from items that you would normally throw away. You can decorate Earth Day by making it into something special.

Design a new recycling idea for your community! Use recycled items to make something new or use recyclables in a way that no one has ever thought of before.

Have a Party

Host an Earth Day party where everyone brings their own recyclable item and makes a craft out of it.

Read or Write a Story

Read stories about our environment to learn more Earth Day facts. Your local library may have books about the natural world for you to check out! Or watch a great video from the list below.

If you're feeling creative, why not write your own story? We'd love to read them, and your parents and teachers will too.

Plant an Organic Garden

Create an organic garden in your yard, community garden, or at school so that you can grow fruits and vegetables for yourself.

This is healthy for you because you know what's in them, and it's good for the environment because you won't be using pesticides or chemicals. Plus you won't have to travel as far to get your food.

The Final Word

Today we learned all about Earth Day This is an annual is an environmental holiday that celebrates the earth and all of its natural beauty. It's a time to reflect on how we can be better stewards of our planet, but it also provides us with opportunities for creativity in art projects or other activities.

The key message behind Earth Day is the importance of sustainability, which means creating systems that are environmentally friendly while still being economically viable.

One way you can practice sustainable living is by reducing your carbon footprint through simple actions like turning off electronics when they aren't in use or recycling items instead of throwing them away - every little thing counts!

You may have noticed that many companies choose this day to launch new products or go green themselves with initiatives such as plant-a-tree campaigns.

This year, consider celebrating Earth Day by planting a garden with your family, writing a letter to your local congressperson about environmental issues, helping keep the earth clean by picking up litter, or just taking some time out of your day to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you.

Whatever you do this Earth Day, have fun, and remember that it's not just for adults! It's for everyone from all walks of life who cares about our planet.
